Ashtanga Yoga means "eight limbed yoga" which is designed to cleanse the body and the mind. There are eight spiritual practices of Ashtanga Yoga and they are Yama, niyama, asana, prananyama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi.
Since Yama literally means "control," you could say that Pranayama is control of "vital energy." When teaching Yoga classes, the four stages of Pranayama should be thoroughly explained. If you think in terms of a pendulum, it is much similar to the four stages of Pranayama.
Sometimes, Yoga instructors are asked to teach classes for free; there is nothing wrong with giving your time for free, but this brings up many more underlying issues. Are "true Yogis" obligated to teach for free because anyone who would accept payment is violating the fifth Yama: Aparigraha?
Generally, Yoga consists of and is described in eight stages astanga-yoga, (‘eight-membered Yoga’). Yama (‘restraint’) denoting abstinence from injury (ahimsa), falsehood, stealing, lust, and avarice is the first stage; with niyama (‘observance’), denoting cleanliness of body, contentment, austerity, study, and devotion to God, the second stage.
If you are going to teach Hatha Yoga classes, there are many subjects to cover, but asana (posture) is often the starting point of most Yoga teacher training courses. It could be debated that we should follow the Eight Limbed Path, as explained by Maharishi Patanjali, by reviewing the first two limbs (Yama and Niyama) before asana.
The original four parts that symbolize Astana Yoga are - yama, niyama, Asana and the Pranayama. These are deal with sanitization usual procedure which is outwardly capable. The other ready of unit which are the - pratyahara, dhyana, dharana are the inner usual procedure.
Yoga is very wide and comprehensive system embracing all walks of human life. It is unlike Ayurvedic, Unani and Homoeopathy. It is not merely a system of treatment but has potential to develop alround health i.e. physical, social, mental and spiritual. For social health, it prescribes the practice of Yama & Niyama and Karma Yoga. A man devoted to karma Yoga looks all the living beings as his bretherens and helps them getting rid of painful situations.
Ahimsa is the first Yama (restraints or don't s). It is non violence, not hurting or harming of other living beings or yourself in thought, word or deed.
